Learn how to use a map and compass at a local orienteering event. It's a low cost, fun activity for the whole family and a great way to learn about navigation, maps and more! A Foot-O is a timed treasure hunt (walking, hiking and running) in which solo participants and small groups start in staggered intervals and use a map and compass to find flags (Control Points) in the woods. Popularized in Europe, Orienteering is really catching on in the United States. You may find that it brings back old memories of "scavenger hunts" in your neighborhood.
The courses range from 2-6 miles and include variety of color coded courses for beginners (flags are on a trail) to advanced (flags are off the trail in the woods). For a nominal fee ($8-10), you receive a color map of the forest preserve, a clue sheet and punch card. The Clue Sheet tells you exactly what natural feature you need to look for to find the location of the flag. You copy the course onto your map, check in at the starters table and then find your way to each of the control points (flags) on the course. When you find one, you punch your card and head to the next until you reach the finish line. The object is to find the Control Points (flags) in order and as quickly as possible, but most newbies are just out for the adventure and hope to not get lost!
You can bring your own compass or rent one for a small fee. (The Beginner's course can typically be completed without a compass.) It’s a fun activity with friends and family and a great workout for your mind and body! There are also Night-O's, Bike-Os, and even Canoe-O's! Find more information at http://www.us.orienteering.org/
