Greening Up Your Miles

Spring is in the air. The flowers are blooming, the trees are budding and the temperatures are on the rise. It sure feels good to get outside and move again! Every April, I set aside time to celebrate the environment and evaluate my personal environmental impact. I look for new ways to reduce my carbon footprint and invest in our environment. Things like making a list of errands and walking, cycling or driving them in an efficient order. Another easy change is turning off electronics at night (computer, phone…) or when not in use.

A few years ago, I started to incorporate greener habits within my running too. It started with what I call my “Earth Day Run,” an annual tradition now where I head out on my traditional 6-mile lakefront run in Chicago. I pick up every piece of trash my eyes can see. What started as a once a year one-woman green run has turned into a shared practice among several runners and walkers in Chicago. It’s not an official event, but it is an easy way to clean up the trails, get in a great workout and make a positive footprint.

There are a lot of fun, easy ways to green up your walking and running miles this season. For example, you can wash your workout apparel with cold water and hang to dry and hold off until you have a full load. It is an apparel-friendly way to get them clean and dry, you’ll save energy and reduce your carbon footprint too!

Stay tuned this month for more tips on how you can green your miles and make a lasting difference.
